You’d imagine that the guy who does an entire blog series on the Oscars loves film and actors and theater and movies that evolve around Hollywood/NY/actor/theater types…but I am not that person. For instance, in one scene in Maestro, there’s 2 theater people singing some god-awful musical song and are annoying everyone being fucking hams (at least that is how I’d feel if some morons started crooning at a party). But, in reality, everyone at the party is lapping it up. There’s another scene in which Bernstein allows his love interest a peek into his life of music and theater and I wanted to die.
Outside of all of this and having to stare at the mole/growth on Carey Mulligan’s face, while being distracted thinking off this amusing scene in Uncle Buck, the movie was ok. The music in the intense conducting scene towards the end was magnificently beautiful…and to be fair to Carey, she could probably win Best Leading Actress. It’s going to be the must-watch part of the Oscars - all of the women put in magnificent performances; except for one. There was not a lot of eating in this movie but there was a ton of parties, drinking, and smoking, so I made these fun little pretzel cigarettes.
Pretzel Cigarettes
8 oz white chocolate chips
Pretzel sticks
Oreos
Silver sugar crystals
Red icing
Set about 6 oz of the chocolate chips in a bowl set over a pot of water (the water should not touch the bottom of the bowl) and bring to a boil. Once the chips begin to melt, stir occasionally with a rubber spatula.
Once the chocolate has all melted, stir on the remaining chips until they melt and turn the heat to low.
While the chocolate melts in the double boiler, break up some pretzel sticks into various sizes.
Separate a handful of oreos, twisting them apart. Break up the chocolate wafers (the sides with no cream on them) and place into a mini prep and blend into fine crumbs. Pour the crumbs into a small bowl and add in the sugar crystals until the mixture resembles ashes. Pour some of the ash mixture into an ashtray or other serving bowl, reserving the rest for dipping later.
Once the white chocolate has melted, dip the pretzel sticks in, coating them in icing, but leaving a ~1” border. Set the dipped sticks onto a sheet of parchment or wax paper.
When the chocolate has set on the pretzels, pipe out a pool of red icing onto the parchment and immediately dip the chocolate covered end into the bowl of reserved “ash.”
Place into or around the serving vessel and serve. These are actually pretty tasty snacks.
