Oscars Tasting Menu: Bangers & The Banshees of Inisherin

Welcome to my Oscars’ Countdown! The past few years, I’ve done a tasting menu the night of the Oscars where I make as many installations as there are Best Picture Nominees. It all started as an idea in 2019, the morning of the Oscars, when I was nursing a hangover at a diner. I hastily scrambled during the day to buy all of the ingredients and make 8 different things that night, without ever watching one of the movies. Since 2020, I’ve made it my task to watch each nominee before coming up with a respective culinary offering. This year, though, I’m trying something a little different. Instead of posting everything the night of the big show, I’m going to lead up with daily posts, as well as two final posts on Sunday.

While I’ve done my very best thus far to avoid spoilers, this post (hell, even the photo) will give away some significant detail. It seems this movie is divisive: you either love it, or think it’s lame. Consider me in the “love it” category. What’s not to love? There’s drinking, music, lovely vistas of the Irish landscape, and plenty of Irish dark humor. Not only humor, but also outright Irish stubbornness. For a more detailed review of the movie, head over to my buddy’s page: Filmvetter, where you’ll get a rating and even more spoilers. I warned ya.

Anyway, my inspiration for this movie is threefold: love of the pint, bangers were indeed bought by Padraic’s (Colin Farrell) sister, and that pesky Irish stubbornness I mentioned earlier. The Irish take stubbornness to a whole ‘nother level, and indeed, Colm (Brendan Gleeson) stays true to his word and mutilates himself every time his old (but newly shunned) pal Padraic attempts to talk to him. So, I captured all three in the photo, as well as mimicking an old weathered bar surface, as the dark pub is where much of the movie’s conflicts take place. But, how did I make the fingers look bloody and, more importantly, fleshy? I jammed in some tampons and used a red Sharpie!
