I kick off my Oscars Tasting Menu in the same manner I've done the last 5 years. Yes, I started this craziness a couple years prior to even launching the blog! As I was watching this very lengthy movie, I noticed Oppenheimer preparing some sort of cocktail in his Los Alamos kitchen, during one of his oft-hosted house parties. It was poured in a martini glass, but he was first dipping them in a plate of some unknown brown-tinted liquid. I had never seen anyone rim a martini glass before and curiosity got the better of me. Turns out, this is a twist of his own making. He would prepare an extremely cold and strong martini (shaken, not stirred) and attempt to offset the punch of the liquor with a rim twist of honey-lime.
Oppenheimer Martini
4 oz gin
Splash of dry vermouth
Juice of 1 lime ~1 oz
Honey
Chill a martini glass in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
Once the glass is chilled, fill a shaker with ice and add in the gin and vermouth.
Juice a lime into a measuring cup, add an equal amount of honey (plus 1 tbsp), and whisk to combine. Pour the mixture onto a plate and dip the rim of the glass.
Close the top on the shaker and shake for 30 seconds.
Using a strainer, pour the shaker contents into the chilled, prepared glass.
Variation: if this is too strong for you or your guests, simply add in some of the honey-lime mixture into the martini.
