Oscars Tasting Menu: Killers of the Flower Moon

This movie was needlessly long as hell. It’s never a good sign when you check the time while watching the movie; it’s even worse when you realize there is still 90 minutes after the second instance you check the time. Suffice it to say, neither the editor for this film, nor Maestro or Oppenheimer, should win the Oscar for Best Film Editor. One of the striking images from this movie was a majestic owl with fiery orange eyes. So, I made some meringue owls.

Meringue Owls

  • 3 egg whites

  • ¾ cup superfine sugar

  • Raisin, cut in half lengthwise

  • Sliced almonds

  • Orange and black icing

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 250 degrees.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, start whipping the egg whites on medium-low speed, until they begin to foam.

Add in ~1 tbsp of the sugar and increase the speed to medium-high. Once the sugar has been incorporated, continue to add the sugar in heaping tablespoon portions and continue to whisk until glossy and stiff peaks form.

Spoon a heaping portion onto the prepared baking sheet, about an inch thick and ~6 inches long in an oblong, tapered shape.

Using the back of a tablespoon measuring spoon, hollow-out two eye holes. Smooth out the surface of the owl and use a toothpick (or handle of a teaspoon) to peak-out some eyebrows. Repeat to form another owl.

Add on some sliced almonds to mimic layered feathers. Place one half raisin on the face area for a beak.

Place on the middle rack in the oven and bake for 90-120 minutes, until the meringue has hardened. Turn off the oven and allow the owls to fully cool (you can do this over several hours or leave in the oven overnight).

Once the meringue owls have fully cooled. Pipe in the orange frosting in the eye socket depression to form a circular iris, then add in the black icing for a pupil.
