If there is one thing I’m a sucker for, it’s wartime movies, especially of the WWII genre. Writer and Director Jonathan Glazer also added a new wrinkle to your standard war flick when he focused on the German side. But, the main character wasn’t Hitler. Nor was it about wartime strategy, bravery, or battle. However, it focused on the life of a commandant who runs the Auschwitz concentration camp and the banal struggles of his wife who runs the family home. Nazis, they’re just like us! This was definitely not the aim of the Director, rooting for the everyday German soldier, but trying to feel any sympathy for fascists who pick through the clothes of imprisoned Jews (at best, and do much, much worse) is just a bridge too far. Novel concept, but not an enjoyable or even interesting movie. Now, this German Chocolate Cake on the other hand, is a guaranteed fan favorite, and it's not even German! The "German" in this classic dessert derives its name from a brand of chocolate. Get the America’s Test Kitchen recipe here.
